Heathers, the dark comedy about a teenage couple who start killing classmates and disguising the deaths as suicides, is to be made into a musical.
The new stage version will be directed by Andy Fickman, who worked on the musical Reefer Madness.
The cult 1989 movie launched the careers of Hollywood stars Christian Slater and Winona Ryder.
In a recent reading, Heroes actress star Kristen Bell played Ryder's lead role of Veronica Sawyer.
Christian Campbell, who starred in Fickman's production of Reefer Madness, read Slater's role as JD, the ultimate bad-boy rebel.
Neither actor has been confirmed for the new show.
In the film, new students Slater and Ryder begin murdering the most popular kids at the fictional Westerburg High after witnessing their terrorising of the school's outsiders.
They disguise a series of murders as teenage suicides as the media descends on the small Ohio town.
| Slater went on to star in films like Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves |
The musical has the blessing of screenwriter Daniel Waters, who controls the rights to the material.
"He understood that our goals were to be creatively attuned to his original work," said Fickman.
The film offered many over-top-moments as well as some very quotable dialogue.
"'I love my dead gay son," Fickman said.
"If you can get that into a song, then that is just perfect."
The production team is aiming to open the show in 2010.
